Theoretical Foundation and Formulas

Reflection Loss (RL)

RL = 20·log₁₀(√σωμ / 2) [dB]

Where: σ=conductivity, ω=angular frequency, μ=permeability. Higher conductivity and frequency lead to higher reflection loss.

Absorption Loss (AL)

AL = 20·log₁₀(e^(-t·√(πfσμ))) [dB]

Where: t=thickness, f=frequency. Thicker materials and higher frequencies produce higher absorption loss.

Aperture Correction (AC)

AC = 20·log₁₀(λ/(20·a)) [dB]

Where: λ=wavelength, a=aperture size. Following the λ/10 rule, apertures reduce shielding effectiveness.

Total Shielding Effectiveness (SE)

SE = RL + AL + MRC – AC [dB]

MRC=Multiple Reflection Correction. Simplified model assumes MRC=0, significant at high frequencies.
