Three Prototyping Processes

A Closer Look at Each Prototyping Option

1

CNC Sample

Fastest 24 hours Higher cost

Samples are machined directly from raw material by CNC. No tooling required—the most direct way to validate a design quickly.

  • First sample in as little as 24 hours
  • No tooling-development wait
  • Precision up to ±0.01mm
  • Ideal for highly urgent first-sample needs
  • Higher per-unit cost ($15-70)
  • Best for verifying design feasibility
2

Soft Tooling

Economical 5-7 days Adjustable

Uses lower-life soft tooling (such as steel stamping dies) to quickly develop and produce small-batch samples. The tooling can be adjusted based on feedback.

  • Fast tooling development (3-5 days)
  • Low sample cost ($3-12)
  • 10-100 sample pieces
  • Tooling adjustable per feedback
  • Suited to the design-validation stage
  • Total turnaround in 5-7 days
3

Hard Tooling

Best 10-15 days Production-grade

Develops formal hard tooling (tungsten steel / copper molds) for true production-grade pilot runs. Samples are identical to mass-produced parts.

  • Highest precision of the three
  • Pilot runs of 100+ pcs
  • Lowest sample cost ($1-3)
  • Fully replicates the mass-production process
  • Samples match mass-production parts
  • Final validation before large-scale production
Prototyping Process Explained

The Complete Process from Submission to Sample Delivery

Step 1

Submit Design Files

Send us your CAD files (STEP/IGS/DWG) or hand-drawn sketches, including key details such as dimensions, material, and precision requirements.

Step 2

Rapid DFM Review

Our engineering team reviews your design within 2 hours, confirms manufacturability, and offers optimization suggestions.

Step 3

Quotation & Confirmation

We provide prototyping pricing, lead time, and sample quantity. Once confirmed, the prototyping process starts immediately.

Step 4

Sample Production

Production begins using the selected process (CNC / soft tooling / hard tooling). You can track progress at any time.

Step 5

Quality Inspection

Once samples are complete, we perform 100% visual inspection and key-dimension checks, and generate an inspection report.

Step 6

Express Shipping

Samples are shipped to you via international couriers (DHL/UPS/FedEx), with full tracking throughout.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Prototyping

Can CNC sample precision meet mass-production requirements?
CNC samples achieve precision up to ±0.01mm, which is more than enough to validate design feasibility. However, due to the higher per-unit cost, CNC is generally not used for mass production. We recommend using CNC to validate the design, then verifying the production process with soft- or hard-tooling prototypes.
Can you prototype several different designs at once?
Yes. You can submit prototyping requests for multiple different designs within a single order. Each design is quoted and produced separately, but progress tracking can be consolidated and everything shipped together.
Does the prototyping cost include sample cost and shipping?
Quotes typically include tooling development, sample manufacturing, and basic inspection. International shipping is charged separately based on destination. All cost items are itemized in your quotation.
If I’m not satisfied with the samples, can the prototype be revised?
Yes. With soft tooling, the tooling can be adjusted based on your feedback at relatively low cost and turnaround. With hard tooling, we recommend thorough validation before prototyping to keep costs under control.
Can prototype samples be used for product certification (CE/FCC)?
It depends on the certification requirements. Generally, hard-tooling samples are closest to mass-produced parts and can be used for certification. CNC and soft-tooling samples are usually for design validation only and are not recommended for formal certification.
How can I track my prototyping progress?
After submitting your prototyping request, you’ll receive a unique project number. You can check real-time progress updates by email or through our online system, and we’ll proactively notify you at key milestones (DFM completed, prototyping started, samples finished, and so on).
